How to Scan QR Codes on Android Phone

To scan a QR code, you need to have a phone or tablet with a built-in camera and an app that can read QR codes.

Most phones have an in-built QR code scanner these days, but if not, there is a good chance that your camera app has one. If not, there are plenty of free QR code reader apps available in the Google Play Store.

QR codes are typically found on products, advertisements and even on business cards. The QR code is a two-dimensional bar code that can be scanned from your smartphone camera. When scanned, it will take you to a specific website or provide other information such as contact details.

How to QR Scan on Android

If you don’t know where to start, we can help. We’ll show you how to scan a QR code using the Camera app on iPhone, but if you have an Android device, there are many ways to scan a QR code with Google Lens or Google Assistant (or apps like these).

Google Lens

We’ll use Google Lens as an example here. Open your camera app and point it at the QR code you want to scan. A notification will appear saying “Tap to get info about this image,” and tapping on it will open Lens. You’ll see the information embedded in the QR code at the top of the screen.

Google Lens won’t be the only option for QR code scanning on Android. You’ll also be able to use the camera app within Google Assistant to scan codes, as well as QR code readers built into Chrome, Samsung Internet and other third-party apps.

Google Chrome

If you’re using the Google Chrome browser on Android and have the Google app installed, scanning a QR code is easy. Simply open Chrome, navigate to the address bar, and tap the small icon in the upper right corner.

Once you’ve tapped that icon, you’ll be able to choose “Scan QR Code” from the list of features available in the menu.

Samsung Internet

To scan a QR code, open the Samsung Internet app and tap the three-dot menu button at the bottom right. Then, tap Settings > Useful Features, and toggle on Scan QR Codes. Now, you can use your phone’s camera to scan any QR code.

You can also open the Samsung Internet app and select Scan QR Code from the floating action button or from the menu button.

We’d advise against paying for one unless it also included some other useful features like being able to create and share your own QR code which is what makes this one worth downloading.

What is a QR code?

QR stands for Quick Response. It’s a type of barcode that holds information like URLs, contact info, calendar events and more. These codes are most often found in print ads and posters so that people can easily scan them with their phones and then take action on the content — like visiting a website or downloading an app.

QR codes were originally created as a tool for tracking vehicles during manufacturing, but they quickly became popular because anyone could create them for free. They’ve actually been around since the mid-1990s and have been used in Japan for years to track parts in vehicle manufacturing. Today, many apps can read QR codes and connect users to web URLs, online videos, coupons or other digital content.
